Topic: small loop = video

Wow. I just saw a very clever use of Flash.

http://missionincrease.org/

Notice: the large picture isn't ALL Flash. The only part that's Flash is the moving part...and it's a small loop, which means download time is next to nothing. The effect, however, is mesmerizing. Have any of you seen other sites that do this? I'm quite impressed (obviously).

We're all looking forward to the future...but none of us more than the giant, evil robots.

Re: small loop = video

That is very cool. Plus, there's no reason why it needs to be in table / tag-soup, so it would work with standards compliant sites as well. In fact, you could probably absolutely position the SWF above a background image, allowing for fallback to the image with no Flash. Cool beans.

Give me liturgy or give me death.

Simple idea, but looks terrific!

Download time would be the same if they did it right. image download time is the same regardless of if you bring it in through the flash player or via HTTP. Size is Size. For alot of our effects we bring in an image that might be lower res or croped without a bg and once that is loaded in we load in the motion loop. So that you get the entire image laoded in farily quickly and then once the motion loop is completely loaded it replaces the static image. Best of all worlds.

Where people go wrong is when they try to put the entire loop into one movie and then give you a loader to sit and look at basicalyl nothing. The beauty of flash is is that you can check when things are loaded and essentially stage things into the layout. But most people just go the easy route and cram it all in.

But as to the overall concept I love seeing these types of effects. http://www.travelingguys.com/ do a great job of it with the little map that shows where they are. They don't have any sort of fallback but it's nice to see the motion in that one small space.

I dream with an XML intereface

Man, I LOVE the Traveling Guys. Their pictures are so great, and the site so nice...

Ninjas and pirates both agree: cowboys suck.

Re: small loop = video

yeah it really is a great site. We use it all the time to show how great photography can make or break a site.
