Topic: Convert XML to SRT?

Anyone have suggestions on how to convert xml to srt? We've added captions to several videos at work (using Captionate), which produces xml files which we add to the Flash video. Now we are looking at adding the captions for the videos on YouTube.

From what I've read, it looks like YouTube asks for captions in srt format. I found an application for converting xml to srt, but it threw a whole bunch of Java errors when I used it on the xml file created by Captionate.

Advice?

I've never had to do this before and I'm not very versed in captioning and the SRT format. What Java errors were you getting? If we can't get the Java converter working (and we can't find another converter), then I'm wondering what would be involved in porting the application to maybe something in PHP or some other language, thus creating your own converter. How urgent is it needed?

Also do you have a sample XML file that I can try and see if the converter you found works for me and also so I can see what the XML file usually looks like?

Re: Convert XML to SRT?

Thanks Yannick! I'm heading into work soon and will run the app again to get the error messages. I'll also post a snippet of the XML code produced.

I found a company that looks like they can handle some of our captioning needs, but not the xml to srt conversion. Are you familiar with Automatic Sync Technologies?  From what I read on their website, it seems they do a lot of audio/video captioning work for colleges and universities.

Re: Convert XML to SRT?

Deborah:

Never heard of Automatic Sync Technologies either. I tried the Google2SRT program and I got the same error as well. Not sure why that is. Perhaps contacting the developer and asking about the error might spur him/her to fix it or at least tell us what we are doing wrong.

By chance do you have an example SRT file that you can send me so that I can have an idea of what the output should look like?

Re: Convert XML to SRT?

Yannick:

Glad you tested out the converter, sorry you had the same results I did. (I was hoping it was user error on my part).

I just sent a SRT formatted file to you.

I can't seem to find any contact information for the person who created the converter application. There's no reference to developer information on the MediaFire website, and the Google Group thread doesn't have an option to reply, only forward.

Re: Convert XML to SRT?

Deborah:

Try this link: http://sourceforge.net/projects/google2srt/ I think there is a user by the name komz who uploaded the project to SourceForge. Perhaps emailing that person might help.

I'll take a look at the SRT file and see what I can make of it.

Yannick:

I sent the developer a message on SourceForge. Not sure it will matter, given you created that nifty application that converts the xml to srt format.

Re: Convert XML to SRT?

Deborah:

Yeah since I wasn't quite sure if I'd be able to do it or not, I figured contacting the developer would have been a good option at the time I posted. Will have to see if I can clean up the code and make it a bit more friendly/easy to use.

Re: Convert XML to SRT?

Yannick,

The converter you created worked great! No issues created an srt file from the Captionate xml file. I sent the converted srt file to our media specialist yesterday, and he's going to test it out on one of the YouTube videos. Unfortunately, he's busy with shoots this week, but hopefully I'll hear back from him before the end of the week on how it worked. I think this is a great application that can help others who are trying to convert their Captionate xml files for YouTube.

Thanks again!

Deborah:

Cool thanks and you're most welcome. I'm happy that so far everything seems to be going okay. Just let me know if everything works when your co-worker is able to test it out on one of the YouTube videos.

Re: Convert XML to SRT?

Yannick,

I sent a message  this morning to my co-worker asking if he's tested out the srt file yet. Will keep you  updated.
