Topic: volunteer work, can I write off on taxes?

Ok maybe this is a silly question, so be nice. smile

I'm doing some volunteer web design work on freelance for a church.
Is there any way to count this as a donation in terms of taxes?
I'll be doing LOTS of work and it would save me LOTS of money next year!

Anyways, I hadn't heard about anybody doing this before, so its probably not possible. But, I thought I'd check!
Thanks all.

Re: volunteer work, can I write off on taxes?

In the past, I would bill the non-profit the amount due, receive the check and then turn around and write a donation check in the amount of the bill (and usually a little more). That way there are no questions.

I don't think that is the best way (I am not CPA and I don't play one on TV), but it was a reasonable and clean solution for me.

Check with your tax guy.  IIRC the only approach was the one Darin mentioned -- but then you also had to count the money as income, which may place you in a higher tax bracket.

hmm - interesting! I will bring that up with the church and see what they think!
thanks

What we do is prepare an invoice for the normal amount and then apply a discount of that same amount as a donation.  Since my partner is the one handling the books and is also a tax preparer, I'm supposing that suffices.  It allows the recipient to see the value received pro bono.

That's my 2 cents :^{>

So then do you record that as a charitable donation on your taxes?
