Topic: Lightbox, Slimbox, lightWindow, Roebox, bears, tigers, oh my!

Well, I'm looking at making the jump and implementing one of these bad boys for both my portfolio as well as my super nerdy City of Heroes' character fansite. However, my knowledge with javascript extends only to what I can copy & paste & easily interpret.

So, I could use some general tips & an overview on what to use as well as if there are any major differences between the different LightBox-esque apps out there.

I use and recommend Slimbox.  It does what Lightbox does, but it's much smaller and faster running/smoother animations.  It also allows you to click on the darkened background to close the slimbox window, which is a great feature.

Go download mootools+slimbox and then head over to ShrinkSafe to combine them into a single javascript file.  Then head over to Dean Edwards Packer and upload your newly combined file and this will pack it down even smaller.

Here's what you want - ThickBox.  It's by Godbit's own Cody Lindley and straight rocks.  The documentation is solid and the framework it's built upon (jQuery) is super solid and lightweight.  Give her a shot - you might like what you find.

I like Roebox.  Very simple.  Easy to use.

Also... I just got it to work with Wordpress, if you're interested in putting it into a blog system.  Take a look.
